fun with yahoo
April 20th, 2007 | tech, generalI depend on yahoo messenger to talk with people daily, therefore I like to leave it on.
Sadly my laptop and yahoo don’t mix. On my laptop, messenger signs out/in every minutes if it’s on and i’m not using it. I’ve reinstalled, tried older versions, different settings…everything. I can’t use Gaim because I like the emoticons available on real Yahoo.
So what, big deal? Well, this brings on a few problems. 1) the friends on my list that have to watch me sign out/in every 10 minutes. 2) if I have a “busy” or “brb” status showing, when it logs out/in I automagically come back with an “available” status. If I’m away from computer, this can be bad.
Recently I found a way to combat the problem: Yahoo LAUNCHcast radio in messenger. When playing songs messenger will stay on forever. Hooray. What if I don’t want to listen to Yahoo radio? I fix that by turning the volume on the radio off, letting songs play while listening to other stuff. Brilliant, eh?
Still, things would be easier if Yahoo just worked fine on it’s own. word.

Clever idea, but is it able to play local files or only stream from Yahoo? Because I’d think it is a bit of a bandwidth suck.
