my half-assed Xmas list

December 14th, 2006 | general

Believe it or not, people actually want to buy me stuff for Christmas. huh. What’s even more shocking is their sad faces when I tell them there’s nothing I really want. Besides a few CDs and a book there’s nothing. So here are a few things I want, along with the reasons why I don’t actually really want them.

1. ipod — Most likely I’d want the biggest one available (I think it’s 80gb now) in white. But here are the problems: A) If I got a nice mp3 player I’m not sure an Apple ipod is what I’d want. My research of mp3 players is lacking quite a bit. B) I have a small, cheap a.k.a. free 128mb mp3 player. It’s OK, but I hardly use it…which makes me wonder if I’d use an ipod more. C) I still use CDs. My life is uneventful enough that lugging around a case of CDs from time to time isn’t a big problem. I don’t need total portability. Speaking of being portable, I still prefer my huge Sony DJ headphones over earbuds, so I might as well lug around a few CDs with ‘em.

2. Apple MacBook Pro — I think that’s the proper name for the new silver Apple laptops. Problems: A) I’m not sure I want to switch to Apple. B) I still have faith that Compaq may be fixed someday (yeah it’s still broken). C) That monster Dell laptop “thing” looks neat too.

3. CD player — I use my little portable CD player alot with my headphones. A week or so ago I started having problems with the AC adapter. The player worked fine on batteries, but as soon as the AC adapter was connected (even if it wasn’t plugged into the wall) the CD player would shut off. Plus, my CD player is kinda fussy when it comes to skipping, even though it has like a minute shock protection or whatever. anyways, the problems: A) new CD players don’t even come with AC adapters…some are optional while some players rely solely on batteries. That doesn’t help me much. B) If I end up getting an mp3 player I don’t need a CD player.

4. guitar effects pedals — There are a load of them I’d like. Prices ranging from $65 - $700. The problems: A) which ones do I really want? B) will I use them enough to justify getting them?

5. a Porsche — OK, I really do want this one. The problem is everyone tells me I’m being unrealistic when I mention it to them. booo.

The good thing about guitar effects-like presents is even if they aren’t exactly what you want, they’re still useful as an add on – a digi-delay or pitch shift can never hurt, right? Something like an MP3 player you really only need one of, and it seems wrong to get one as a gift just to go out and buy the one you really dig leaving the gift stuffed away in a drawer.

Gimmicky computers scare me. I’m not trying to push you toward Apple or anything but things like that Dell that try to be the best of both worlds generally aren’t. It’s overcomplicated and so as an alternative I’d go for a more conventional 15″-17″ notebook, or something smaller plus an LCD monitor.

But yeah, if you can find someone willing to get you a Porsche for Christmas, can you throw in a good word for me too? I’ll even settle for a base 911.
