computers and me

July 25th, 2006 | tech

I’m at that scary level of knowledge with computers. You know, the point where I think I know what I’m doing, only to then start and realize I have no clue what’s supposed to happen next. For example, I’ll get an idea about a design for this website and start changing colors/graphics only to soon get totally lost in HTML code and files and such.

The same thing for computers in general. I want all the tech programs and browser add-ons/extensions, but when I go into the guts of the computer I get lost very quickly.

A while ago now Compaq (my laptop) died. I turned it on and it “couldn’t find my user profile” (I still think this problem was brought on by downloading/installing an update for Windows Defender Beta as that’s the last thing I did that night before death, but oh well).

Since the trouble started I’ve been working with Microsoft Tech Support to get the situation fixed. I’m still working on it. Some people may think I’m stalling because I could care less about the computer and because I’m lazy. Neither is true.

The fact of the matter is that I’m scared as hell working on it. Tech Support is telling me to do things I’d never try on a computer and I know I’m always one wrong click away from permanently killing Compaq, and if there’s one person that can kill a computer without trying it’s me.

Apparently the files are still on the computer, so I have to create a new user profile. Sure this is simple for some people, but insanely tense for me. Hell, I cringe when I have to restart after installing updates. I can just picture myself deleting all my files.

So, yes, bringing Compaq back is taking a while, but it’s not because I’m lazy or don’t care about it, but I’m scared of screwing it up worse…so I keep putting it off.

Anyways, this whole situation has made me grow to hate computers day by day. At first I thought “I’ll get an Apple and all will be better”, but now I realize they have problems too. Sure I’ll still use internet to check on the Premier League scores and find the Sudoku solutions for the puzzle in the newspaper each day, but I’m getting to the point where I’m completely anti-tech (kinda like guitar playing–old school tube amps still sound better than high tech modelling amps). Yep, I never again want to depend on computers for storing files or music files. I was hoping to get an ipod sometime this year, but now I hope I can avoid mp3s forever. Computers are only good for the occasional browsing of the internet…and I’ll let other people worry about providing the content.

And as far as storing text files and notes using Word or Notepad…well, that’s what paper and pencils are for.

But you can’t give up on mp3s before giving in to Zune!
