moto is here

April 26th, 2006 | tech, general

Honestly I’m getting bored writing about my mobile phone issues, but the series of posts would feel incomplete without a final summary post. In the last post I mentioned that a new Moto RAZR was being shipped to my house. It arrived today. Fantastic. Before new Moto could be used it needed to be activated and old Moto deactivated. I put in the battery and plugged it in for a charge. After lunch the call was made. New Moto was now in service and old Moto was officially retired from duty.

The rest of the day was spent playing with new Moto. I quickly noticed that this is a slippery little thing as I nearly dropped it half dozen times. I’ll get used to it…I’m sure old Moto felt the same way when I first got it, but that was so long ago I can’t remember. Anyways, first I put in all my contact numbers. I realized how out of touch I am with everyone I used to talk to because over half of the numbers in my phonebook are no longer in use. I guess the good part is that it didn’t take long to input the contacts into new Moto.

After the contacts came finding a decent ringtone. I like the traditional ringtones. You know, the ones that just go ‘ring-ring…ring-ring’ when someone calls. I don’t want to hear the latest Top 40 hit whenever someone calls me. But, I guess the rest of the world does want Top 40 ringtones because the 2 or 3 semi-traditional ringtones I could find are even a bit too, err, moderny? I’m still debating between a few.

After I gave up on ringtones I looked at the wallpaper selection. The phone has a couple decent wallpapers that come on the phone. Since I don’t really care what’s in the background of my main screen I picked one and moved on. User’s can also take their own pictures and make it into the wallpaper, which I’ll probably eventually do.

After wallpapers it was on to other standard phone set-up stuff: picking which functions the short-cuts keys go to, changing pin numbers, how long the back-lit screen stays lit blah blah blah. It was all fun and the best part is the battery stayed full power all day long! Old Moto would have already been demanding a charge (which was the reason for the new phone).

With all the nice features of new Moto, I also found a few things I’m not too fond of. I already mentioned the phone being slippery. Another annoying thing is that somehow I always manage to hold it so that my fingers rest on the camera lens, leaving a nice fingerprint on the lens screen. No big thing really.

The last “problem” may be an unavoidable pain…the on/off music. The only time I want to hear noise is when someone’s calling me. Immediately the key/button volume was changed to “0″, along with everything else besides the incoming call ringer. The problem is that there is no way to mute the sound it makes when turning the phone on or off while having the ring volume on. On old Moto, the ‘turning the phone on/off’ sound was muted when the key/button volume was turned off. Not so with new Moto. It appears the ‘turning the phone on/off’ sound is based on ringer volume, not key/button volume. So now the only way to keep new Moto muted while turning the tele off is to switch to silent ring, then powering off. Then after turning the phone on one must remember to turn ringer volume back on. booo. I’m hoping I’ll find something to turn it off, but no luck so far.

All in all, new Moto RAZR V3c is quite an update when compared to old Moto V60i. Yeah, I will kinda miss old Moto, but I’m sure new Moto will be great. Now I’m off to play on the Web…not on Compaq computer, but on new Moto!!!

welcome to the cool kids club. one thing about the new moto though, if you use the alarm clock on your phone alot, you will hate this one. do not forget to click “enable” on that SOB! i can’t even count how many times i was late to work because i set my alarm but forgot to enable it. it is a rad phone though.
