« curses to Kyocera | moto is here »

hello new moto

April 20th, 2006 | tech, general

I think I just got tired of waiting for a Kyocera reply.

A week or two ago my mobile phone service provider sent me a little letter, basically trying to tempt me into updating my plan and phone, both of which are no longer offered to new customers. I had already been thinking about the topic of a new phone, but even after reading the letter I decided to put it on the back-burner like I had so many times before and ‘keep looking’ for new phones coming out.

Today I received my latest mobile phone bill in the mail, which prompted me to stop dragging my feet and get a new phone/plan/number. I’ve been with my service provider so long that I have a different customer service tele number I can call…one that’s not listed on their website or the monthly bills they send out. I gave a call, got put on hold. Holding. Holding. Holding. “Hello, can I help you?”

First order of business was changing my number. I had moved from city ‘A’ to city ‘B’, but still had a city ‘A’ number. This means people in city ‘A’ I no longer talked to day-to-day could call me ‘locally’ while people in city ‘B’ which I now talked to on a day-to-day basis still had to call long distance, even though I was about a mile away. The reason I never changed numbers earlier is because I have a national plan, so I didn’t have a roaming charge whether I was in either city, and I didn’t want to get a new number, only to end up moving somewhere else. Anyways, the new number process was easier than I thought and within a minute or two my phone had a new number.

Second on the list was getting a new phone. I’ve mentioned in previous posts that my service provider’s phone choices suck compared to other providers. In my case I had first narrowed it down to RAZR, Kyocera Slider Remix, LG AX5000, and some Nokia phone. Within a couple days my provider stopped offering the Nokia on the website, so scratch that. The LG looks nice, but looks too similiar to my current phone…not tech enough. That leaves Kyocera Slider Remix vs RAZR.

Recently I submitted a question about a new ‘coming soon’ phone to Kyocera and have yet to receive a reply. I whined about this yesterday. This made me lose some of my fondness for Kyocera. I wasn’t sure if I’d really like a slider style phone either. I’m used to flip phones. The Slider does have an mp3 player feature that can be expandable to 512mb with a different memory card or battery or whatever. But I’m thinking about getting a big memory mp3 player, so the mp3 player feature of Slider wouldn’t be needed. Then another person whose opinions/statements I respect and trust mentioned that the people he personally knew seemed to like their RAZRs. I took his comment and added to it the fact that my own soon-to-be retired Moto had never failed me. How could I go against Motorola now?

By the time I hung up my current mobile had my new number, I had a new plan in place (same fee, more minutes), and a new Moto RAZR was being shipped to my house. I could hardly get a new phone capable of so many things without at least trying out the Web access feature, so I added that after being assured I could drop it whenever if wanted. I can’t wait.

No reply because Kyocera isn’t a real company. Ha!

To be fair to Kyocera, they are a real company after all as I finally got a reply…albeit a week after emailing them after promising a reply within one business day.

As for their answer: They couldn’t confirm a release date for the phone or future carriers at this time. At least they answered

Wheee! You might be the second person I know to have gotten a RAZR yesterday. I am still infatuated with that Samsung, but it’s going to be awhile before I move on it, I think.

    Anyway, yay for technology!
