random bits of thoughts
March 7th, 2006 | generalI have tons of small random thoughts that I think about quite often, but none of them are long enough for one whole post. So here are a few random stupid thoughts.
1. two cars are both moving at 60mph towards each other and collide head-to-head. would that cause more, less, or the same amount of damage has one car moving at 120mph and hitting a non moving wall/car? are there other factors besides speed? In both cases an object is closing in on the other object at a rate of 120mph…or so I think.
2. how much scarier would everyday movements be if there weren’t any walls, but rather drop-offs. for example, walking from the kitchen and down a hallway to the bathroom is no big thing. now pretend all the walls in the kitchen, hallway, and bathroom don’t exist, there’s only a huge drop-off with no guard rail…kind of like a cliff. even after taking away the element of wind (yep, no wind) this could make everyday tasks painfully scary. I know I can walk through every room of the house without touching a wall, but they offer a layer of security. if there weren’t walls, I’m not sure how many people could continue going on.
3. how much money does Chris Moyles really make? He regularly mentions how little he’s paid, which is supported by the fact that radio DJs in general don’t usually make much. But then there’s the evidence: 1. he’s a breakfast hours DJ, and they are paid better than say a midnight shift DJ. 2. he works at a station in London, and in the world of media the bigger the city, the more money you’re paid. 3. he’s not only a breakfast hours DJ, but DJ for BBC Radio 1, arguably the most popular radio station in the world. We in the U.S.A. have two ways of listening (besides taking a trip to the U.K.)…either online or on a six (or five…whatever)-hour delay on Sirius Satellite Radio. Plus, an online listener can use the ‘listen again’ feature and has one week to listen to any of his shows (or any Radio 1 show) at anytime they want. 4. he claims he drives a British racing green Audi TT or S4 (I forget). Both are nice cars, the S4 being a bit more money. But the car he drives may not matter as Audis may be cheaper in the U.K. They aren’t viewed as the costly premium import (Audi, Mercedes, BMW) like they are in the U.S.
Yep, these are the things I think about. More to come in the future I’m sure.

I googled and it’s rumored that Moyles makes somewhere around 350,000 pounds/year. Which I think should be a *cough* livable income.
As for the no walls thing; if you can work it out I’m cool with it; it could be a little Darwin-esque. Though roughhousing might be a little more risky.

wow roughly $612,500. what the hell is he complaining about? sure living expenses in London may be on the high side, but I imagine that’s enough to “get by”, and then some.

funny you mentioned the moving cars one. i just had that same conversation with someone about a week ago except we were thinking 30 and 60 mph. same deal i guess.

The more I read about it, the more it seems that the pounds dollars conversion isn’t that straightforward. The cars they have over there are priced similar to ours but in pounds, so I’d go out on a limb and say the two are really much closer disregarding conversion rates.
Regardless, no question that even $350-$400K is enough to survive.
