real video games

February 7th, 2006 | general

I’m guessing he was reminded of the real Nintendo’s greatness after reading a recent post on another site, but PDF decided to play some Super Mario Bros. this past weekend. Of course I’m now hooked on the game. I’m trying to remember if I ever actually finished the game on my own, without warping. I mean I remember playing it, but I don’t remember ever having the controller in my hands when Mario jumps over the final dragon in world 8-4. Whatever the case, I sure can’t beat the game now. It’s all those impatient foolish mistakes. You know what I’m talking about. Sure you could get through the level easily, but you know it’s easy, so you hold the ‘B’ button down to run fast, only to find that you should have stopped to wait for a ladder to come back or something stupid like that. It’s just like Frogger…it’s easy to cross the street, but the impatient, gambling part of you kicks in and you try clearing 2 rows of cars when you know you could have easily moved 1 row, waited for a car to pass, and then moved again. ugh, patience.

To take a break from Mario Bros. I tried Duck Hunt tonight. For a few years now I thought that the zapper gun didn’t work correctly. I started the game and began shooting ducks with ease. I thought ‘well, I guess I was wrong, the zapper gun works fine’. Then it happened: I bumped the trigger while the gun wasn’t pointed near a duck and I got the kill. Turns out I was right that the zapper gun didn’t work after all. I don’t know if the laser has gone bad after all the years or what but as long as you aim anywhere near the tv screen you’ll kill the duck. It kind of sucks the fun out of the game when you learn all you need to do is aim in a general direction to get a perfect score. Oh well, maybe I should try out some of the other games.

Nope. It was the Super Mario Bros. Synth I mentioned to you that reminded me.

Funny, this is the second thing I’ve read about light guns today and I finally learned how they work. I wish I knew where mine went.

And I remembered yesterday that we also have Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy so I ended up getting my ass kicked in that instead of the standard NES version. I need to get a portable Super Mario Bros. 3. That game is a fun time.
